Theme, Motto and Message in Event Communication

ImageThe terms theme, motto and message are often heard in conversation. But the meaning of these terms for the field of events and their significance for live communications are not as well known.

ImageEvent theme

The theme of an event relates primarily to its subject matter. For business-to-business events in particular, it is absolutely essential to define a theme in order to prevent the event from degenerating into something like a general get-together. The topical orientation provided by the event theme is generally beneficial to event participants. For most B2B events, the theme is shaped by the organisation’s field of business (pharmaceutical, telecommunication, energy, etc.), the occasion of the event (anniversary, product presentation/in-house exhibition, conference, etc.) and the target group (customers, employees, business associates and so on).

Event motto

The motto is the device, slogan or maxim of the event -- for example, "Fête Blanche". Does it make sense to assign a motto to an event? This decision must be made first and foremost in relation to the type of event and the event theme. In general, the motto should not feel forced but its implementation should be true to the style it stands for. Giving an event a motto is a particularly good choice when enjoyment, rather than the presentation of complex products, is at the fore of the event.

Event message

The message of the event is the thing that is to be communicated to the guests through the event. Whether it makes sense to communicate a message through an event depends on the given event. A product launch, however, will not work without an appropriate message. The message of an event is also important when it comes to communicating a USP (unique selling proposition). Last but not least, events for employees can also be enhanced with the appropriate message.
